Still alive!

07 April 2008 | Bolivia, Cobija

I am so sorry that I havnt left any messages lately! Internet at the university hardly ever works anymore and during the day I am just too busy to go to an internet cafe. And and night I am really tired. It is usually very hot and humid here, and that is very tiring! I spend my days reading management plans and other documentation of the municipalities and departmental government, but most of my time is spent on arranging interviews. Not on the actual interviews, mind you. Just the calling and calling and finally getting and apointment and then half the time people dont show up, and almost always they are at leat half an hour late... Plus, the project that I was supposed to be travelling to municipalities with starting eind of march/early april hasnt even started yet, so I am having trouble arranging my visits to the communities... But I guess that is just the way it is here, I am getting used to the fact that this is just the way things are done in Cobija.
Of course, I am not always working! Me and the other two dutch students have joined a really great group of friends from all over bolivia and the world. There are doctors, people who work for ngo´s, the prefecture, companies... All really interesting people and having these contacts is very useful. Almost every evening we hang out at our usual restaurant, having dinner and drinking juice (or SOMETIMES beer or wine), this restaurant just happens to be a one-minute walk from my house so that is perfect! In the weekends we go out together, there is exactly one bar here that plays half decent music, and there is one place where you can go dancing, so it is not hard to pick something :-) Well that is, in short, my life now in Cobija! I do usually get on the internet every few days, so please let me know how you are doing! Hugs and kisses!!!

Actually, most of this planet works like that... Either the world is so simple that it can function without anyone doing anything, or we are just lucky to still be alive.

Good to hear you are having fun!

    Pieter:

Yeah right, "sometimes" beer or wine :P.

Britain doesn't work like that, actually. On the other hand Britain is probably one of the most bureaucratic countries in the world. I've been here for over a week now and I still have to wait for my bank account here and only when I have a bank account in the UK, I can get a UK phone number. The only weird thing is that on the other hand I don't have to say to any legal office in town that I arrived an that I will stay here for at least three years.

What is nice with all the bureaucracy here is that every single person has been really nice and helpfull to my, untill now, let's hope this stays this way.

Furthermore I already went to a gig last week and had a drunk night out on friday with my housemate with whom I can get along very well. My other housemates I will meet probably this weekend.

Daarleeng!
